The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm for a sum reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The family released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is developed, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
